The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) has officially entered its full operational phase, creating the world’s largest free trade zone by number of participating countries and connecting 1.3 billion consumers.
The agreement eliminates tariffs on 90% of goods traded between member states and establishes frameworks for trade in services, intellectual property, and investment.
Economists estimate that the fully implemented AfCFTA could increase intra-African trade by 52% by 2030, adding an estimated $450 billion to the continent’s GDP.
“This is Africa’s moment,” said Wamkele Mene, Secretary-General of the AfCFTA Secretariat. “We are building the foundation for an integrated, prosperous continent.”
Key sectors expected to benefit include manufacturing, agriculture, and technology services, with smaller economies gaining the most from access to larger markets.
