General Buhari

Burkina Faso’s coup leader, General Gilbert Diendere saidTuesday that he would remain the head of a military junta until the outcome of a summit of West African leaders holding in Abuja, Nigeria.

President Muhammadu Buhari will on Tuesday in Abuja host an Extraordinary Summit of the Economic Community of West African States Authority of Heads of State and Government.

The information is contained in a statement issued on Monday by the president’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu and made available to journalists on Monday in Abuja.

Mr. Shehu said the main item on the agenda of the summit would be the current political situation in Burkina Faso.

President Buhari has condemned the coup d’etat in Burkina Faso and called for immediate restoration of civil transitional authority.

He urged the Defence and Security Forces of Burkina Faso to keep faith with the agreed transitional programme for the return of the country to democratic rule after elections, which were due to be held in the country on October 11.

Nigeria donated 20 pick-up vans to the National Electoral Commission of Burkina Faso towards successful conduct of the general elections.

Senegalese President Macky Sall and his counterpart from Benin Republic Boni Yayi, last Friday, visited Burkina Faso to assess the prevailing situation following Thursday’s coup by elements of the Presidential Guard under the leadership of Gilbert Diendere.

Mr. Sall is the current chairman of the ECOWAS while Mr. Yayi is the facilitator of the Burkina Faso dialogue.
