In Boko Haram’s elusive leader, Abubakar Shekau’s most recent video released after the January 3 Baga attacks, the leader said and referred to the opposition candidate,

“Nigerians are busy with politics, hailing Buhari! Buhari, Jonathan! Jonathan! Do you think the two of them are spared? Do you think even Buhari is a good Muslim? Buhari is not a Muslim as far as we are concerned – He is nothing but an infidel and our enemy.”

It was a strong statement made by the sect leader ahead of the February presidential elections. He further dismissed Nigerian soldiers as cowards and while displaying hoards of arsenal he had captured in the Baga attack of the multinational force barracks, accused the president of Nigeria of being a liar in claiming the nation lacked weapons.

Major Sins: Calling a fellow Muslim an Infidel Is Not A Joke In Islam

Islamic scholars consulted said that one of the greatest sins a Muslim can commit is calling another Muslim a non believer. That this is never joked with in Islam. “Be careful who you call Kafir because only Allah knows who is truly a rejector and who is merely a misguided person. It is not up to us to “sentence” a person to the Hellfire.”

The prophet of Islam is quoted to have said, “Any person who calls his brother: O Unbeliever! (then the truth of this label) would return to one of them. If it is true, (then it is) as he asserted, (but if it is not true), then it returns to him (and thus the person who made the accusation is an Unbeliever).” [Muslim]

Therefore, if a Muslim calls another Muslim “kafir/disbeliever” or “mushrik” without discrimination, you could find that you have left Islam, according to the words of the Prophet (s.a.w.), in less than a second. Once you call a brother an infidel, you have drawn a line and one of you will certainly go to hell. It is a no go area.

The scholars said Nigerians should not joke with “Abubakar Shekau” because he is not a Muslim himself but a pretender as otherwise he will not have called Buhari a non Muslim and the sect will not have killed over 2000 innocent mostly Muslims in Baga and environs, a predominantly Muslim settlement where the terrorists have not had any conflicts with the people.

“Shekau is afraid of Buhari, this is why they (Boko Haram) is quickly trying to make gains across the north,” one scholar said. “In their warped ideology, the first declare you a disbeliever then they feel justified to fight you. This is what they have now officially done to Buhari. They are very evil hypocrites and enemies of Nigeria; we must be firm to defeat them.”
