Where Are Nigeria Intelligence Agencies? – NewsRescue.com

September 02, 2014.

By: Samuel Bill

I was so ashamed and disappointed when Australian Dr. Stephen Davis shocked the whole nation on some critical issue on Boko Haram. I’m not condemning this man for job well done and I’m not saying what the man said is true of false but my point here is that where is our intelligence agencies? They are in better position to give military and other securities agents’ accurate intelligence report, expose those behind terrorism in Nigeria, work with military and security agencies to get them arrested rather than a foreigner playing their role.

In my write up on Naij.com. titled ‘Obstacles In Nigerian Military War Against Boko Haram’ www.naij.com/69923.html one of the major point I stated is that “in these modern times, intelligence reporting is paramount to military in order to win the war against terrorism. I also stated that Nigeria Military lacks capacity in the sphere. Terrorism is now a global phenomenon and intelligence reporting is more needed than ever. American acknowledged this fact that is why United State Intelligence Community comprises of 17 different agencies (CIA, DIA, FBI, NSA, NGA, NRO, AFISRA, MI, MCIA, ONI, OICI, I&A, CGI, ODNI, DEA/ONSI, TFI, INR)

Nigeria intelligence agencies was known before as National Security Organisations. This organisation gave birth to State Security Services (SSS), also known as Department of State Security (DSS), National Intelligence Agency (NIA) and Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA).

State Security Services (SSS), is responsible for domestic intelligence, while National Intelligence Agency (NIA), is responsible for foreign intelligence and Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) is responsible for military intelligence.

These groups were to work together to provide analysis in areas relevant to national security, give early warning of impending crises, detection and prevention of any crime against the security of the state, furnish the military, paramilitary and other securities agents with necessary intelligence report, work with military and other securities agents to protect the country, and study the activities of current or potential opponent/enemy. They are also involved in defensive activities such as counter intelligence and counter terrorism.

Every strong country of the world doesn’t joke with their intelligence agency and are always proud of them. Americans are proud of Central intelligence Agency (CIA) and others while the strength of Israel Defence Force (IDF) lies in The Institute for Intelligence and Special Operation (MOSSAD), Shin Bet, Aman, Intelligent Corps and Units 8200.

France is always proud of Direction Generale de la Security Exteriure (DGSE), while United Kingdom has Security Services (M15), National Crime Agency (M16) and others. Russia is also not lacking with its Federal Security Services (FSB), and Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU). China has Ministry of State Security (MSS), Germany has Federal Intelligence Services, Australia, India, Iran, Canada, Pakistan, Korea and other too is not left behind.

Intelligence job is a heroic task. They sometimes endanger their lives to save a nation. They use a lot of means to gather information. This include- interception of communication, covert human intelligence source, evaluation of public sources, espionage, interview, technical and physical surveillance, satellite source, cooperation with other institution, cryptanalysis, accessing internet company data (Yahoo, Facebook, google, Microsoft etc), intensive surveillance (e.g eavesdropping in someone’s home or car), text message gathering, targeted spying, direct surveillance, Tap telephone call, cyberspace and online technique, imaginary intelligence source, daily news and social media source, and so on.
Having listed how other countries are doing well to avert future sad occurrence and nipping in the bud security threat, I’m not writing to condemn our intelligence agencies but calling them to do more and help us to fish out the sponsor of Boko Haram in Nigeria.

Our intelligence agencies should give the Nigerian military necessary intelligence report needed to work with to put an end to Nigeria security challenges.

Remember, security is everyman’s business. Let’s cooperate with our military and other security agents.

God bless Nigeria!
Samuel Olanrewaju Bill.
